AR Overview The Accelerated Reading Program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension, motivates students, increases literature-based reading practice, and provides teachers with detailed and objective instructional data.
Each AR book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. When students take an AR test, they get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test questions they get right. The HomeConnectprogram allows parents to monitor the progress and success of their child throughout the year.
In addition to Accelerated Reading, we are also using STAR, a computerized reading assessment program. It lets us know the current reading level of our students and their "ZPD", or Zone of Proximal Development. This zone provides the levels from which they should be selecting books to read so that they can be challenged but not frustrated.
Please remember that each night your child should consider themselves as having homework in my class - at least 20 to 30 minutes of reading per night, unless they have already met their AR goals for this nine weeks period.
Students: 1) select AR books on their reading level 2) read independently or with a buddy 3) fill out the "Reading Record" on their book and turn it in 4) take an AR test on the computer
Students must take their AR test in my room or in the library with special permission. Students may only take one AR test a day.
AR Grades
Students are required to get 25 points every nine weeks. Grades are based on student points and comprehension. Points will not carry over to the next nine weeks, and extra points will not be given.
